And I just happened to be hanging around, so I did it.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As the then-reigning back-to-back Big Eight (now Big 12) Conference decathlon champion for the Cornhuskers, as Allen was in 1991 and 1992, why <em>wouldn\u2019t<\/em> you\u00a0be hanging around the women\u2019s gymnastics team? If charisma was a sport, he&#8217;d still be leading the league.<\/p>\n<p>Allen\u2019s affable, smooth, confident tone on the air transitions just as easily outside of the booth to the confines of the NBC Sports tent where we talked about his job as the voice of NBC Sports\u2019 rejuvenated NASCAR franchise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing about this position is easy, but I am privileged and very excited to be here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Allen got his start announcing races\u00a0at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Nebraska after getting a degree in speech communications.<\/p>\n<p>He joined Fox Sports in 2003 and served as play-by-play man for Camping World Truck Series and Xfinity races until last year. Former NASCAR driver Jeff Burton and former crew chief Steve Letarte join Allen in the booth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1970 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rick-allen-nascar-paul-eide.jpg\" alt=\"Rick Allen Is The Smoothest Guy In The Room...Next To Paul Eide. \" width=\"559\" height=\"747\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1970 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rick-allen-nascar-paul-eide.jpg\" alt=\"Rick Allen Is The Smoothest Guy In The Room...Next To Paul Eide. \" width=\"559\" height=\"747\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At any one time, I have five people in my headset, whether it\u2019s my producer, our spotter, our stats guys&#8230; all providing me with information to make the broadcast as engaging and understandable\u00a0as possible\u00a0for the fans watching it. And that is on top of the conversations I\u2019m having in the booth, with Jeff and Steve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allen isn\u2019t just a mouthpiece who acts like he knows what he&#8217;s talking about; the authenticity of his interest and enjoyment of NASCAR is palpable as\u00a0he speaks. He\u2019s the voice of the franchise and is excited about helping\u00a0viewers understand\u00a0the intricacies of\u00a0the sport with\u00a0the second biggest audience base, trailing only the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNASCAR is seen as a guilty pleasure by a lot of people. We\u2019ve all heard the jokes about endlessly turning left. But there is so much more to it. We want to explain and explore the strategy. Think about it in terms of football. If you run the ball on first and second down, you\u2019re setting up a downfield pass on third down to the tight end. There is every bit as much strategy in NASCAR.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1971 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/daytona-speedway-night-paul-eide-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"daytona-speedway-night-paul-eide\" width=\"759\" height=\"569\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1971 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/daytona-speedway-night-paul-eide-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"daytona-speedway-night-paul-eide\" width=\"759\" height=\"569\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>The goal of authentically connecting with the audience via the broadcast team extends to the network itself, as NBC Sports has collaborated with perceived rival network Fox Sports on promotional efforts, something that is unheard of among the largest networks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qqsZZGsHzfQ\" width=\"477\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a great relationship with everyone at Fox,\u201d Chief Marketing Officer of NBC Sports John Miller\u00a0explained. \u201cWe learned that the higher the ratings were for the Daytona 500, the higher the ratings were for each ensuing race over the course of the season. So even though we compete with Fox on certain things, in this instance, it\u2019s good for both networks, and most importantly the viewers, for us to work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NBC Sports bid $4.4 billion to broadcast 20 Sprint Cup and 19 Xfinity races, sharing the 36-race schedule with Fox for the next decade. NBC Sports will broadcast the remaining races, including the\u00a0\u201cChase for the Sprint Cup\u201d playoff format that began last season.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1973 size-large lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/nbc-nascar-behind-the-scenes-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"nbc-nascar-behind-the-scenes\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1973 size-large lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/nbc-nascar-behind-the-scenes-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"nbc-nascar-behind-the-scenes\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe amount of trucks, production facilities and staff is equivalent to covering the Super Bowl,&#8221; said NBC Sports VP, Strategic Communications Tim Buckman. &#8220;Except we tear it down and move it to a new city every week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Touring the facilities was like observing a small city. Four modified trailers house the production team that is responsible for bringing NASCAR to life on your TV\u00a0or, increasingly, your device.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the Sochi Olympics, we saw a viewership increase of two-thirds between the ages of 12-24, and it was all because of this,&#8221; Miller said as he gestured towards his phone. \u201cThis has really changed how we market and the kind of experience we want to create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of that effort is\u00a0Bumper NASCARs. In Fan Zones at NASCAR venues nationwide throughout the season, Bumper NASCAR gives fans a chance to flex their race muscles behind the wheel of traditional bumper cars, modeled after machines belonging to 12 of the most popular Sprint Cup drivers. Participants\u00a0also receive a limited edition pair of NASCAR on NBC sunglasses.<\/p>\n<p>According to Allen, that&#8217;s all part of NBC&#8217;s new approach to their NASCAR coverage. &#8220;If you didn\u2019t grow up in racing and get introduced to the sport via your family, how would you ever get introduced? Our goal is to explain it in an easy, conversational way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recently, a pit crew had a nine-second pit stop and the other teams couldn\u2019t figure out why, until they watched the video and saw that the team had increased the RPM\u2019s in their drills. Some teams are only using three lugnuts on tires for a faster pit time. Even though its faster, you think the driver doesn\u2019t know that and it isn\u2019t going to affect his approach?
