Kyle Petty is<\/em> NASCAR.<\/h1>\n

The son of iconic driver Richard Petty raced at the highest level for over 30 years, owned a racing team for over 10 years, and has been a TV commentator since 2008.<\/p>\n

Petty’s place in NASCAR history is unique: He is the living bridge between NASCAR’s early icons and the stars of today.<\/p>\n

In the ’70s he raced against legends like David Pearson and Bobby Allison; in the ’80s and ’90s, he squared off against Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt; and in the 2000s, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Petty has experienced the evolution of the sport in a way that no one else can lay claim to.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0April 30th, he will lead the 22nd annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America<\/a>. The Ride will take 200 bikers on a 2,150-mile route to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction<\/a>\u2013 a camp Petty started in 2000 for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0asked Kyle for his insight into\u00a0the icons\u00a0of the sport, his first professional race as an 18-year old driver at the 1979 Talladega 500, and his trademark ponytail.<\/p>\n

During the end of the 2015 season, Jeff Gordon got a lot of credit for mainstream crossover appeal during his career. But I always thought that your dad was the guy who did that first.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kyle Petty: \u00a0I always explain that like this: I think in the history of the sport, since the sport started, in the ’50s the sport was finding its way for 10-12 years, to figure out what it was going to be where it was going to go. Then in the late ’50s to early ’60s, you had the Richard Petty\u2019s and the David Pearson\u2019s and the Bobby Allison\u2019s and guys like that who came into the sport.<\/p>\n

The funny thing was is that I think my father was that guy who took the sport from the early ’60s into the latter part of the ’70s. And like you said, he was the guy. If you knew anything about NASCAR you knew who Richard Petty was. He had gone to the White House, he had done things that no other race car driver had ever done. He won championships, he won races. He\u2019s that mountain peak from basically the ’60s to the ’70s. And then along comes Earnhardt in the late ’70s. And Earnhardt was able to take the sport, TV came into it, and he was the guy that took the sport from the late ’70s through the ’80s into the early ’90s, to the point where Jeff came along to the mid-90s.<\/p>\n

When I look at the sport, there\u2019s been three transitional players \u2013 Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr., and Jeff Gordon \u2013 that have moved the needle. On how the sport is perceived, on how the sport is played, and how drivers and fans alike look at the sport. There\u2019s been a lot of great drivers and a lot of great champions that have come along, but those three guys when you look back at the sport in 50 or 60 years, those three guys had an impact on the sport. Not just went on on the racetrack, but how America perceived the sport.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Talladega 500 in 1979 was your first NASCAR race. Do you remember what it was like to sit in that driver\u2019s seat before the race started? <\/strong><\/p>\n

KP: Oh my God! I do<\/em> remember. Like I said, I grew up with all those guys. (David) Pearson and Bobby (Allison) and all those guys. And here I was 18-years old, in a race car and I was going to race against them! I was going to race against the guys that I had grown up with their kids! Davey (Allison) and Rickey and Eddie and Larry Pearson and all those guys. And here I am, out on the race track with them \u2013 I\u2019m not just standing in the pits anymore. And I\u2019m thinking. \u2018Oh my God, what am I gonna do?\u2019<\/p>\n

I qualified like 19th<\/sup> or 20th<\/sup> and I think I finished ninth or 10th<\/sup> that day, something like that. But I will never forget, I ran that race, and they come by me so fast it would make your head spin. And I thought, \u2018These guys are tough<\/em>, man!\u2019 I never realized how tough these guys are.\u2019<\/p>\n

The race is over with and I\u2019m just sprawled out on the bench in the garage area because I\u2019m just spent<\/em>. And David Pearson comes by smoking a cigarette. He looked at me and said, \u2018You\u2019re gonna have to get a helluva lot tougher if you\u2019re gonna hang with us.’<\/p>\n

I bet he wasn\u2019t joking either was he?<\/strong><\/p>\n

KP: No, he was not joking! And I\u2019m thinking, \u2018Holy crap! Here\u2019s these 40-year-old guys just kicked this 18-year-old’s butt six ways from Sunday!\u2019 And I thought I was in shape! I had just come out of high school playing basketball, football, and I knew<\/em> these guys weren\u2019t in shape.<\/p>\n

When I look back on the races I ran in the early part, I was very blessed to be able to race against my dad, and Cale Yarborough and guys like that. And then race against guys like Earnhardt, Rusty (Wallace) and Mark (Martin), and be able to run against guys like Jeff and Jimmie. I\u2019ve had a very blessed career to be able to race against some of the best drivers ever.<\/p>\n

Your personal style on TV is so smooth – I actually love<\/em> the pony tail. I\u2019m sure the guys give you a hard time about it every once in a while. <\/strong><\/p>\n

KP: They all do! And here\u2019s the funny part \u2013 this is true. I always had longer hair and I went to drive for Felix Sabates. Felix had bought our team\u00a0back in the late ’80s or early ’90s. And he hated<\/em> my hair, man. He kept saying, ‘Get it cut, get it cut, get it cut.’ And finally I went and got it cut. And the very next race, we went to Talladega, Alabama. I was in a wreck and broke my leg. I had to sit out for three or four months. I told him after that, ‘I am not cutting my hair again, it\u2019s bad luck!’ Basically since that time, I\u2019ve cut the ponytail a little bit here and there so it\u2019s not all the way down my back. But I told him, ‘I guess I\u2019m gonna be that 100-year-old guy with a pony tail \u2013 I don\u2019t want to change my luck.’ It went bad one time and I\u2019m not changing it again!<\/p>\n

Since 1995, more than 7,750 riders have logged 11.4 million cumulative motorcycle miles and raised $16.5 million for Victory Junction and other children\u2019s charities.\u00a0<\/em>A variety of celebrity riders will also join the 2016 ride, including NASCAR Hall of Famer and seven-time champion Richard Petty, 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame<\/a> nominee Hershel McGriff, NASCAR legends Harry Gant and Donnie Allison, former NFL great Herschel Walker, retired Lieutenant Colonel\u00a0Allen West, and NBC Sports NASCAR personalities Rick Allen and Rutledge Wood.<\/em><\/p>\n
